Search Engine OptimisationIn essence the process, or rather the art of SEO is in ensuring that your site has pages that will be listed in the search engines and that visitors can find you when they are looking for your services or products.Part of this is to make sure that you are listed on the first page (usually the top 10) for any engines. Getting a good page rank (or PR) requires finding the most appropriate search terms (not necessarily the most used) and creating pages that will perform well according to the rules used by each engine.
Although there are literally hundreds of search engines and directories, the largest are powered by a few databases. Google is currently the most popular due to its speed and accuracy, however the importance of Inktomi, which powers Lycos/Hotbot, Altavista and the old standard Yahoo should not be ignored.
Our SEO process takes the following steps: We create pages that will achieve the optmimum PR. The requirements for this varies on a monthly basis, as search engines regularly change their algorythms. Significant factors though, include the Title, Main heading and keyword density in the text. Other factors that we take into account are links to and from the site, the menu structure within the site, page and domain names. Once created we submit the pages within the rules of each search engine. These vary considerably - some have clear daily limits, whilst others will only accept a single page and crawl through the site's links. As a general rule, we expect to see results over a month. Once the first round of optimisation is complete, we analyse the results by checking the PRs and either ammend or add more pages. A helpful part of this process is to get access to your site's log statistics so that we can identify changes over time.
